‘An ethnicity of nature’
India has one of the largest tribal populations in the world and is also major destination for tribal tourism. The tribes existed as a social group before the development t of states. Also, the tribal societies are organized largely on the basis of kinship. These tribes prefer close tie to nature and inhabits near the natural environment. In India, the states such as Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Madhya, the Union territories of Pondicherry, Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the Seven Sisters (states) of North-East have rich population of tribes.
Tribes of Seven sisters
The seven sisters refer to as north-east state namely; Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura Meghalaya and Assam exist with picturesque natural beauty. Also part of North-east terrain is Sikkim. In this region, inhabits many tribes in harmony with the nature. The tribes here are agrarian and celebrate through various folk dances and music festivals. These tribes are creative and have variety of art and handicraft skill. Some of the tribes even have their own literature. The tribes here have religious beliefs namely, Christianity, Islam and Buddhist. Arunachal Pradesh has 26 major tribes, Apatanis is major tribal group. Nagaland inhabits 16 major tribes and Assam is home to more than 8 plain tribes such as Nara, Tiwa etc. The life of these tribes seems fascinating and alluring with lush natural flora and fauna in blend.
Tribes in Orissa
In Orissa there is largest number of tribes in India i.e. 62. These tribes mostly live in south west part of the state and comprises 23% of India’s total tribal population. It inhabits primitive communities like Gadabas,Kondhas, Bondas, Koyas and Sauras. They follow a traditional belief system and have very ethnic lifestyle and are quite hospitable in nature. They earn their livelihood through agriculture, fishing and hunting. The tribal women folk wear different ornament also the tattoos are also believed to be quite fashionable.
Tribes of Rajasthan
In Rajasthan the tribal populace is around 15% of the total. The major group is Bhil tribe which is one original dweller in Rajasthan. The Baneshwar tribal fair held every year in the months of January/February at Dungarpur. Here you can see them performing tribal dance, wearing ethnic clothing adorning sword and sticks.
Tribes of Maharashtra
It has almost 50 tribes of which the primitive ones are Bhils, Gonds, Mahadeo Kolis, Pwras, Thakurs and Warli.
